Becoming a Career and Technical Education Teacher:
Meeting the Challenges of the First Few Years
Throughout our careers spanning over three decades, we welcomed thousands of industry professionals into the ranks of CTE teacher. We always tried to be frank with the new teachers, "You know your trade, but teaching high school students is an entirely different challenge." We like to think the advice we shared with these new teachers over the years helped ease their burden of being a new teacher and set them on a path to becoming a competent and enthusiastic teacher.
And now you know what compelled us to put pen to paper and share the lessons we learned with the new CTE teachers we had the pleasure of working with. We want to share this knowledge with every industry professional beginning their journey as a CTE teacher.
We hope this book is helpful as you navigate the challenges of your first few years of teaching in CTE. Think of the book as your beginner’s toolkit to CTE teaching. We focused on the important tasks and responsibilities you’ll experience in the first few years of your teaching career. We organized the chapters in a sequence to address a CTE teacher’s more immediate needs.
Becoming a CTE Teacher is all about grasping promising ideas, building them into a skill set, and using them effectively day in and day out. We formatted the concepts and practices in a streamlined manner, making them easy to understand, and focusing on the important stuff!
You are bound to make mistakes, and you will undoubtedly learn them. But they don’t all have to come from personal experience, at least yours. The book has the ‘tips and tricks’ we learned that will help you avoid making everyday mistakes.
